Since 2015, in partnership with the Government of Punjab, GEF has been starting new schools in these underserved areas, with clean classrooms, safe drinking water, and nourishing meals within every child’s reach.

WHY THIS MATTERS
Where there is no school nearby, children never get the chance to begin
In many villages of Bhakkar and Jhang, education was a distant dream. Government schools were inaccessible and there were few private alternatives, so families who wanted their children to learn had nowhere to send them. Starting a new school is the most direct way to change that, and since 2015 GEF has partnered with the Government of Punjab to find the areas of greatest need and build schools there.

Building on its success in Bhakkar and Mianwali, GEF partnered with the Government of Punjab in 2015 to bring schools to areas where none existed. By mobilizing 5,000 families, GEF opened 32 new schools, each with clean classrooms, safe drinking water, and nourishing meals. Today 3,186 children attend these schools, and young girls walk confidently to class in communities where education was once out of reach.
