Out of School Children Program — bringing every child in Muzaffargarh into the classroom

Many out of school children in Pakistan have never stepped into a classroom at all. In Muzaffargarh, where the literacy rate stood at just 29% in 2013, GEF has opened schools within a kilometer of children’s homes and enrolled the children who had been left behind.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Millions of children in Pakistan have never stepped inside a classroom

In 2013, Muzaffargarh’s literacy rate stood at just 29%, and countless children had never been enrolled in school. Under the auspices of the Punjab Education Foundation (PEF), and co-sponsored by DFID, GEF set out to change that. We mapped the district, found the areas with no schools, and opened new Ghazali schools within a kilometer of children’s homes, so distance would never again keep a child out of class.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

From a 29% literacy rate to 239 schools and 23,744 children learning in Muzaffargarh.

When GEF began its work in Muzaffargarh with the Punjab Education Foundation and DFID, education was out of reach for far too many children. By mapping the district and opening new schools close to home, GEF has built a network of 239 schools. More and more families now line up at our doors, and we continue to open new schools and welcome more children into the Ghazali family.
